ESG Industry Top Rate - The Navigator Company awarded top ESG honor

Every year, Morningstar Sustainalytics unveils its list of companies with the highest environmental, social and corporate governance performance. The Sustainalytics Top-rated ESG performers for 2023 include the Navigator Co. SA.

Navigator Co. SA is a European brand which owns and operates FSC-certified forests and produces EU-Ecolabel office, printer paper for business and home markets, and paper packaging. Being awarded a Sustainalytics Top-rated ESG badge recognizes the achievements in sustainability and environmental, societal and corporate governance by the paper manufacturer.

Why is ESG important?

A strong environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) strategy underpins the operations of all successful businesses.

A strong ESG performance is critical to business success. While some companies view ESG commitments as an expense, the best performing companies know it is a source of competitive advantage.

Incorporating ESG considerations can help investors make more informed decisions about the long-term viability and ethical practices of companies they choose to invest in. Additionally, companies that prioritize ESG are more likely to attract and retain customers, employees and investors who are increasingly conscious about the social and environmental impact of their actions. By considering ESG factors, companies can better manage risk, build stronger relationships with stakeholders, and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

How does the Navigator Company perform against ESG goals?

The Navigator Company has a well-developed ESG strategy and has worked hard over recent decades to deliver on these goals. It continues to drive sustainability through its operations and the paper industry.

It does this in a number of ways. First, it manages its own forests sustainably; they are certified by the two most important environmental certifications: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC). The forests are managed responsibly according to strict, internationally recognized criteria.

The business provides diverse, specialist careers in forestry research, renewable energy management and paper production. The majority of its employees are hired on permanent contracts (95%), reflecting its commitment towards stability and the local community.

Its impact is also felt much wider than the immediate economy. Its runs projects and voluntary schemes to preserve natural heritage, including in the Sado estuary and in Mozambique. And it partners with governments and institutions to promote environmental conservation, including with WWF International’s New Generations Plantations Platform.

Wearing its new ESG badge with pride

Navigator Co. SA already boasts numerous badges along its many brands, including from the FSC, the EU Ecolabel and for BLI performance certification. This latest recognition from Sustainalytics for top-rated ESG practices will help to cement the company’s reputation as an ethical business.

It is another marker of trust for consumers and businesses who want to choose products and brands that are committed to delivering sustainable goods and services.
